The word: 'Slavery'

Today we discussed the term 'slavery' and the many ways individuals and organizations define the word. Students created their own definition, and explored the definitions of others. They examined different forms of slavery, accompanied by first hand accounts of individuals who experienced slavery in differing ways. After reading the poem, "To Be a Slave" by Julius Lester students reflected on what for them personally stood-out in the poem as powerful. Then analyzed why in their journals. We ended the day by looking at some shocking statistics about the existence of slavery in our modern world, and within the borders of the United States.
